Biography
Dr Lyn Bishop OAM has had a long and distinguished career in the State Education Department.
She has held the positions of Senior Mistress, Deputy Principal, Principal, Deputy Executive Director of Metropolitan East Region and A/Director of Quality Assurance for Education Queensland, before leaving the Department at the end of 1996 to set up Sheldon College as an independent, non-denominational, co-educational College in the Redland Shire. Dr Bishop opened Sheldon College as its Foundation Principal in 1997 and served as Principal/CEO until December 2021.
Dr Bishop holds Bachelor Degrees in Arts and Education; Masters Degrees in Educational Studies, Educational Administration and Business Administration; as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. Dr Bishop is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management; a Fellow of the Australian College of Educational Leaders; and a Fellow of the International Institute of Directors and Managers.
Dr Bishop is a fully qualified psychologist and is registered with the Queensland Psychologists Board and the Australian Psychological Society, and she is also a Justice of the Peace (Qualified).
Dr Bishop was a part-time lecturer in the Business Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology where she lectured in the Master of Business Administration Program (MBA).
In 1999, she won the Australian Institute of Management Professional Manager of the Year. This is the first time this award had been won by someone in the field of education.
In 2002 Dr Bishop won both the prestigious Ernst and Young Queensland Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Australian Entrepreneur of the Year for a Community, Social and Not-for-Profit Enterprise. Dr Bishop was also awarded a Centenary Medal for services to education in 2003.
In 2013 Dr Bishop was awarded the QUT Most Outstanding Alumni Award for the Faculty of Education.
Dr Bishop was invited by the Queensland Educational Leadership Institute (QELI) to become a facilitator for Leadership Development in Australia. She trained for this position in the UK at the National College of School Leadership. In 2014 Dr Bishop was also awarded the title of QELI Ambassador for her contribution to educational leadership through the Queensland Educational Leadership Institute.
In 2019 Dr Bishop was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to education.
In January 2020 Dr Bishop was awarded the ultimate accolade in Professional Management and Leadership – that of Chartered Manager (CMgrFIML). The Chartered Manager designation is globally recognised as the gold standard of leadership excellence. It also includes membership of the Chartered Management Institute of the UK.
